The world is a constant contradiction. While 2018 stood, par excellence, as the year of the body positive , it became at the same time that millennials chose to lead and pave the way towards the normalization of plastic surgery. The evidence is clear: if the popularity of botox – as a non-surgical treatment – has increased by 87% among the millennial public in the last eight years, cosmetic touch-ups – which do involve surgery – have grown to 43% in this generation , according to data from the Society of Aesthetic Medicine .
Experts say, of course, that the fault lies with the Kardashians (her own surgeon described her image as “harmful” for new generations) and Instagram … Or, in other words, the pressure that social networks exert on the physique of young people between 18 and 36 years old. «Often they cannot show you what they want to change in front of the mirror. They need to take out their phones and show a photo. This fact is concerning and indicates that, in many cases, they may be seeking surgery for the wrong reasons.
But the truth is that there are other reasons that may be contributing to this new “trend” among young people. The first and most important, that the social stigma regarding undergoing these types of operations continues to fade: plastic surgery is no longer only for the most eccentric, wealthy or vain. The second, which has popularized it especially in the male sector and as indicated by 42% of young men who choose it, is that the physical aspect is increasingly valued when it comes to remaining competitive in the workplace. Another that has added a small percentage to the total is the increasing importance of self-care:the growing interest in health and self-care (which has also increased the popularity of exercise and dieting).
The 4 plastic surgeries most demanded by millennials
- Breast prosthesis
50% of all cosmetic surgeries performed in Spain and is the most requested by this generation.
The second is the reduction of localized fat in the buttocks and the cartridge belts. They go to it when they can’t eliminate it with diets or sports.
Another of the most demanded by millennials is nose surgery: “to modify its shape, increase or decrease its size, change the silhouette of the tip, narrow the nostrils or modify the angle between her and her upper lip ”.
Or, what is the same, repositioning the ears called “blown” to a position closer to the head.
